County Operations

In response to COVID-19 (coronavirus), Montgomery County and the towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg are closing government facilities to the public, effective at 5 p.m. on Thurs. Mar. 19. The closures will be revisited and any revisions announced during the week of Mar. 30.

Recent Updates

Individual Department and Agency Information

Effective April 3, 2020, at 5 p.m., the Montgomery County Government Center is Closed.

The following governmental functions will continue during this closure: 

  • Emergency Services and Public Safety
  • Operations at the Montgomery County Court House (some restrictions apply)
  • Utility Operations
  • Operations at Consolidated Sites (Montgomery County residents)
  • Animal Control response for bite cases, incidents involving seriously injured animals, or official requests for services made by public safety officials in response to emergency incidents.

Animal Care and Adoption Center and Animal Control

While closed to the public, the ACAC staff will continue to provide the highest level of care for our animals, as always. Volunteering will not be permitted during this time. ACAC staff are caring for the animals. Donations are not being accepted at the facility during this time.

Animal Control is limiting animal intakes during this time by only bringing in animals that are sick, injured, in danger or creating a danger to public safety.

Social Services

The lobby is closed to the public. The dropbox is still accessible in the main lobby. Adult and Child Protective Services and Case Management for Foster Care Services are still being conducted.

All library branches are closed to the public through Apr. 19, 2020. Library updates.

Members of the public are encouraged to utilize online services available at and to avoid personal appearances in the Clerk’s office when possible during this time.

New River Health District

The New River Health District has activated a local public health hotline at 540-267-8240, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon; Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. 

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program is still being administered. In addition, Family Planning services are still being administered. For details, call 540-585-3300.
