Parks and Facilities

Montgomery County has multiple unique park offerings. Our amenities include a disc golf course, hiking and biking trails, playgrounds, ball fields, walking paths, an outdoor swimming pool, picnic shelters, and more. Learn more by visiting the park pages below.

Coal Mining Heritage Park and Loop Trail is located at mile five of the Huckleberry Trail between the Town of Blacksburg and the Town of Christiansburg. This park features a 1.5 mile loop trail, mining artifacts and historical markers, and open green space.

Eastern Montgomery Park is tucked away in the eastern part of the county on the South Fork of the Roanoke River. Enjoy pleasant mountain views during your visit. Amenities include a playground, picnic shelter, volleyball net, open green space, a trail along the river, and an airfield for the Montgomery County Model Airplane Club. A canoe and kayak launch is also available, which begins the Roanoke River Blue Way that travels 45 miles and culminates at Smith Mountain Lake in Bedford County. Additionally, the annual Great Road Encampment is held at the park in August.

The Frog Pond Swimming Pool is Montgomery County's only public outdoor leisure pool. Features include beach-entry, water slides, fountains, geysers, and a children's pool. The season runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Golden Hills Disc Golf Course is located at Mid-County Park and consists of wooded fairways with challenging elevation changes. The course is one of only 19 in the United States with 37 holes. A picnic shelter is also available by the course parking lot.

The Huckleberry Trail is an 13.75 mile rail trail connecting the towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg. The paved trail is a great place to exercise and spend time in nature, and is also an excellent option for individuals wishing to commute to school or work via bicycle.

McCoy Park is located behind the Long Shop-McCoy Fire Department and Rescue Squad on the western side of the county. Amenities include a picnic shelter, playground, walking path, and youth baseball/softball field.

Mid County Park is centrally located on 89 acres between the towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg, and is home to the Frog Pond Swimming Pool, the Mid-County Activity Center, and Golden Hills Disc Golf Course. Additional amenities include an outdoor basketball court, playground, three picnic shelters, and nature trails.

Motor Mile Park is a tournament-style baseball facility featuring a Babe Ruth League regulation baseball/softball field with dugouts and a multi-purpose practice field nestled under a picturesque rural landscape near the City of Radford. This park also features a picnic shelter, playground, and restrooms.

Plum Creek Park is located in the southwest region of the county near the City of Radford. Amenities include a youth competition level baseball/softball field, walking track, playground, picnic shelter, open green space, and restrooms.

Whitethorne Public Boat Launch provides access to the New River in the McCoy area of Montgomery County, and is a prime location for fishing. There is a concrete ramp for easy launching of water craft. Limited trailer parking is available. 

 

Picnic Shelter Rentals

Please note that shelter reservations are limited to 100 participants, or the limit set by the Governor of Virginia at the time of your event. 

The season runs April 8 - October 31, and we begin taking reservations on April 1. Reservations must be made at least one week in advance. Check current shelter availability and make your reservation online or by calling our office during business hours at (540) 382-6975, Option 1.

We offer half day rentals for $30 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. or 3 p.m. - 9 p.m. and whole day rentals for $50 from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.

 

Frog Pond Pool Rentals

We are optimistic that the Frog Pond Pool will be open for the 2021 season, however we are awaiting final decisions from the Governor of Virginia's office.

We offer Frog Pond Pool rentals on select Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the normal pool season from Memorial Day through Labor Day. We begin taking reservations on April 1.

Rentals are from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. for $200.

There is a 50 person maximum limit (including swimmers and non-swimmers) for the reservation unless arrangements are made beforehand with the Aquatics Supervisor.
