Our Active Adults and Senior programming is a combination effort with Montgomery CountyChristiansburgBlacksburg, and Radford Parks and Recreation departments, the Montgomery County and Radford RSVPMeadowbrook Library, and the Christiansburg/Montgomery TRIAD S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Law Enforcement Working Together) Council.

Enjoy programs catering to adults ages 50+, including arts and crafts, games, music, special presentations, picnics, socials, and more. See what's out there by signing up for our many trips and tours. We offer a wealth of activities to encourage life enrichment through engagement in social and physical activity, while taking a trip off the beaten path!

Coffee & Tea Social - Free

From the farm to your cup - responsible, all natural, and fresh! Join us for a safe, physically distanced coffee and tea social hour! Great Road Coffee has plenty of room to physically distance while hanging out with friends. Each participant is responsible for their drink and food cost. The deadline to register is the day prior to each event.

 

Morel Mushroom Hunt - $7

W, May 5, 1:00 p.m., Location: Participants to be called week of event

Morels are America's mushroom, more so than any other. It may be because they are widespread, they're easy to identify, and they come up in spring, giving people a reason to get out and enjoy warm weather after a long winter. Or, it could be they're so popular simply because they taste so good. The deadline to register is April 28.

 

Virtual Trip Series: Destination #3 - Free

1:00 p.m., Christiansburg Recreation Center, Multipurpose Room #2

Leave your bags at home and join us for the virtual trip series! Participants will receive a "passport" that we will stamp for each destination. Prizes will be awarded in December 2021. Lunch is provided by Commonwealth Senior Living - Christiansburg Campus. The deadline to register is April 30.

Cookie Decorating: Spring - $25

Join us for some sweet treats and creativity! Decorate cookies with a spring theme as instructor Niki leads the class. Participants will get to take home their yummy artwork to enjoy! The fee includes all supplies. The deadline to register is April 30.

 

Step-by-Step Canvas Painting: Sunrise - $17

Tu, May 11, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., Christiansburg Recreation Center, Multipurpose Room #2

Join instructor Beverly Bridges to paint a scenic sunrise landscape on canvas. She will provide clear instructions every step of the way, so even if you are a beginner this class is for you! The fee includes all supplies. The deadline to register is May 4.

 

Casual Conversations: Drug Interactions - Free

Christiansburg/Montgomery TRIAD S.A.L.T.

The Christiansburg/Montgomery TRIAD S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Law Enforcement Working Together) Council works on various projects to benefit senior citizens in the community. The council meets every third Tuesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. at the Christiansburg Recreation Center. Meetings are open to all senior citizens to attend. Carvins Cove Kayak Trip - $30

Health Benefits of Honey - Free

Learn about the health benefits of honey. Our speaker is Steve, an Agriculture and Natural Resource Agent from Virginia Tech. Light refreshments will be provided. The deadline to register is June 2.

 

American Flag Craft - $4

Explore beyond your imagination and show your American spirit with this unique craft. You can display your craft on multiple occasions, such as Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, or Labor Day! Buckle Up for Bingo - $5

Don't throw out your lemons, limes, oranges, or other citrus fruit. Instead, turn them into candles! The fee includes all supplies. The deadline to register is June 25. 

 

National Watermelon Month Bingo - $5

W, Jul. 14, 11:00 a.m., Christiansburg Recreation Center

Enjoy all the watermelon you can eat! This juicy and wondrous fruit is enjoyed by the young and old alike. Watermelon is a great source of potassium, antioxidants, and Vitamins A, B6, and C. It is a fat-free food and contains only 40 calories per cup, so eat as much as you want! Enjoy a fun game of bingo and win prizes to celebrate your summer. The deadline to register is July 7.

 

Chanterelle Mushroom Hunt - $7

Tu, Jul. 27, 1:00 p.m., Location: Participants to be called week of event

"Golden chanterelles" are one of the most well known wild mushrooms. They are sought after by chefs and foodies due to their delicate flavor, which some describe as "mildly peppery". Ranging in color from yellow to deep orange, golden chanterelles are easy to spot in the summer forest. The deadline to register is July 20.

 

Burlap Bow Tutorial - Free

Thu, Aug. 5, 9:00 a.m., Radford Senior Center

Learn how to create different styles and sizes of burlap bows with this easy tutorial! All bows are simple to make and can embellish other crafts or items around the house. Ladybug Coffee Mug - $5

Heritage Day Festival - FREE

Enjoy celebrating Montgomery County's heritage at this popular event. There will be vendors, food trucks, live music, pie contest with prizes for adults and children, silent auction, children's activities, genealogy team, garden tours, re-enactors, tractor hayrides, and more! Chicken of the Woods Mushroom Hunt - $7

Southwest Virginia mushroom hunting season does not have to strictly be confined to the spring months looking for morels. The late summer and fall months are an ideal time to find chicken of the woods mushrooms. Never heard of them? These mushrooms are so named because "they taste like chicken"! The deadline to register is August 24.

 

Cruising on the Pontoon - $47

F, Sept. 3, 10:00 a.m., Claytor Lake

There's no better way to spend the day than with lunch and a relaxing cruise on the calm waters of Claytor Lake. We'll be traveling in style on an 18-foot party pontoon with reclining chairs, diving board, and water slide. We'll provide hotdogs on the grill, a side, and drinks. This is a great opportunity for wildlife photography, or you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the sights and sounds of Claytor Lake. The deadline to register is July 26.

 

Grandparents Day Craft - Free

Wed, Sept. 8, 11:00 a.m., Christiansburg Recreation Center

Celebrate grandparent's day with your grandchild(ren), ages 3-5. You will create a kite to enjoy outdoors or indoors. The deadline to register is September 1.

Gnome Welcome Sign - $70

Tu, Sept. 28, 1:00 p.m., Wine & Design - 438 Peppers Ferry Rd NW, Christiansburg

Create a hand-painted welcome sign featuring a cute gnome with interchangeable decorations! Fee includes all supplies. The deadline to register is August 27.

Senior Lock Box Program

This program is available for older adults and provides emergency first responders a way to quickly gain access into the participant's home during an emergency. This program is sponsored by the Christiansburg/Montgomery TRIAD S.A.L.T. Council and Christiansburg Police Department. How to Register

Register online, by phone at (540) 382-6975, or by visiting our office in the Montgomery County Government Center, located at 755 Roanoke Street, Suite 1E, in Christiansburg.

 

Policies

Deadlines: A deadline is set to secure tickets. If the minimum number of participants is not met, an activity will be canceled.

Refunds: For a full refund, cancellations must be made prior to the registration deadline. An exception can be made only if a substitute is provided or the vacancy can be filled from the Wait List. Refunds are automatic if an activity is cancelled. 

Medicine: Participants must travel with at least a 24-hour supply of medication in the event of a return delay due to inclement weather or other circumstance.

Inclement Weather: If Montgomery County Schools are cancelled or on a 2+ hour delay, programs will be cancelled.

Wait List: If an activity is full at the time of inquiry, you can request to be placed on the waiting list. If a vacancy becomes available, participants will be notified and given seven days to submit the fee.
