    Fall 2023 Activities

Water Powered Mills of Floyd County by Ricky Cox - $10

Tu, Oct 3, 11 am, Montgomery County Government Center

This illustrated lecture is based on The Water Powered Mills of Floyd County, Virginia: Illustrated Histories, 1770-2010 by the late Franklin F. Webb and Ricky L. Cox, (McFarland Publishers 2012). Mabry Mill is by far the best known Floyd County mill, but it is not the newest or the oldest or the biggest or the smallest. Although fewer than ten remain, at least 140 other water-powered mills existed in Floyd county at some point during the last 250 years. Prominent mills, millwrights, and millers will be discussed, along with the rural communities that once depended on local mills for livestock feeds as well as the flour and cornmeal that appeared on farmhouse tables, in some form, at virtually every meal.

Participants are asked to bring their favorite dish to share for a potluck style lunch.

Ricky Cox grew up and now lives in Floyd County, Virginia. He worked in the machine tool industry in Montgomery County, VA, before earning a Master of Arts in English at Radford University, and afterward taught courses in English and Appalachian Studies at Radford University for over thirty years. He coedited A Handbook to Appalachia: An Introduction to the Region (2006), and, with the late Franklin F. Webb, coauthored The Water Powered Mills of Floyd County, Virginia: Illustrated Histories 1770-2010 (2012).

The deadline to register is September 26.
