Wrapping for a Reason

Wrapping for a Reason is a holiday wrapping booth to raise money for local emergency assistance. They are located in NRV Mall near Belk's indoor entrance. The booth is open at various times through Dec. 24. Volunteers are needed to wrap gifts. All proceeds benefit Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program, commonly known as "MCEAP," which provides emergency food, clothing, utility, rent, and mortgage assistance to Montgomery County residents year-round. This booth is an ecumenical effort, and they invite all who want to help their neighbors to join them during this season of giving. The Sign Up link is http://bit.ly/Wrapping18. Christiansburg Police Department Citizens Support Group

Volunteers are needed to make pies for the annual Christiansburg Police Department holiday dinner on Friday, December 6. Call RSVP if you would like to bake pies for this event.

Radford Elf Shelf 

The Radford Elf Shelf is seeking volunteers to help with organizing drives for donations of money or new toys/gifts, shopping for specific age groups, trucks/drivers to pick up new toy donation boxes throughout Radford, set-up at distribution site the two days preceding distribution/shopping days on December 6 and 7, and assisting shoppers on distribution/shopping days. Assistance is also needed with general tasks and fundraising. For more information, please contact Cheryl Loving at cat47loving@gmail.com .

VA Medical Center

We will sponsor a holiday social for veterans at the Salem VA Medical Center on Tuesday, December 10th, at 2 pm.  We will take individual treat bags for 40 patients. Items needed are candy (does not have to be sugar-free); individually wrapped snack food items such as snack cakes, crackers, chips, and cookies. In addition, we will be collecting the following items as the VA Medical Center is in desperate need of donations. Shirts (sizes L and XL), shoes (sizes 11-13), underwear (sizes S, M & L), shower shoes (all sizes), Wal-Mart gift cards, double blade razors, deodorant (men and women’s), brushes, toothpaste, and backpacks/duffle bags. Donations must be new with tags, and we are no longer able to take homemade snacks. Please bring items to RSVP by Monday, December 9.

Change of Date

The Heritage Hall and Commonwealth Senior Living visits will be cancelled this month due to the Christmas holiday. Our monthly activities will resume in January 2020 to serve refreshments during their monthly birthday parties.

Montgomery Museum

Volunteers are needed to serve as Docents and assist with fundraising activities. Call Sue Farrar at 382-5644 for more information.

Reality Store

The Montgomery County Cooperative Extension is holding its Reality Store on Thursday, December 12, at Christiansburg High School. Reality Store is a budgeting exercise in which volunteers role play with the students. If you can assist with this worthwhile program, call the RSVP office for the CHS bell schedule.

Tax-Aide

The AARP Tax-Aide Program provides free federal and Virginia tax preparation to low and middle income taxpayers of all ages.  You do not have to be a tax expert, training, and certification are provided. Volunteer positions are being a tax counselor (prepares tax returns) or a client facilitator (helps check in clients). Counselors and Facilitators are needed on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 1 - 4 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to noon during tax season. Please contact pballard@vt.edu or phone 382-1189 for more information.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Help your community in preparing taxes free of charge by becoming a volunteer with VITA, an IRS sponsored program that offers free tax help for people with low-to-moderate incomes.

No prior experience needed. Free tax law training and materials are provided  that assist you with learning how to prepare tax returns and the tax deductions and credits that benefit eligible taxpayers. Following the self-study period, certification at the Advanced Level is required (accomplished through an online exam which preparers may take up to 2 times and pass with an 80 percent).

Hours are flexible—you set the hours you can work. Volunteers generally serve an average of five hours per week at sites in the New River Valley (Montgomery, Floyd, Pulaski Counties) from February through the tax filing deadline in April.

Volunteers are needed to both prepare income tax returns and to perform quality review of returns prepared by other volunteers.

MCEAP Home Store and More

MCEAP’s newest location is not just for women. Besides furniture, they have plumbing, electrical, computers, appliances, automotive, tools, a Christmas Shoppe, and electronics. They are requesting volunteers to help at the register, price items, and move furniture. The times needed are Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. If interested, call Margie at 449-2415 to join the crew. They would love to have you be a part of the team!
