What are your office hours?
The Treasurer's Office is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Does the Treasurers Office accept credit card payments?
MasterCard and Visa credit and debit cards are accepted at the Treasurer's Office at no additional
cost. To pay by phone, via the Internet, or with American Express or Discover, please see the Tax Payments by Credit Card page.
Does the Treasurers Office charge a return check fee?
Yes. Effective July 1, 2004 the Treasurers Office charges a $35.00 return check fee in the event a bank fails
to honor any check tendered in payment of taxes, penalties, interest, fees, or other charges.
The Treasurer's Office will only accept guaranteed funds when paying taxes
and fees associated with a vehicle registration withholding (DMV STOP). Guaranteed
funds accpeted are cash, cashier's check, certified check, money order, and
credit/debit card.

Do you have a night drop box?
We have a drop box located near the main entrance to the Government Center located off Chinquapin Trail Drive in Christiansburg. The Treasurer's drop box can be used 24 hours per day, 365 days a year, to drop off payments for taxes, motor vehicle license fees, dog tags and PSA water bills.
Where do I need to report a change of address?
The Commissioner of Revenue’s office will need this address change for
future tax billing, contact that office at (540) 382-5710.
Who do I call if I didn’t receive a tax bill?
Real Estate taxes are due June 5 and December 5. Personal Property taxes are due
December 5. Tax bills are mailed approximately four(4) weeks before the due date.
If you do not receive a tax bill by two (2) weeks before the due date, please
contact the Treasurer’s Office at (540) 382-5723.
If I live in the Town of Christiansburg or the Town of Blacksburg do I pay Montgomery County taxes?
The Town of Christiansburg and the Town of Blacksburg are both in the boundaries
of Montgomery County. Your property will be assessed for Montgomery County taxes.
You may call the Town of Christiansburg at (540) 382-6128 or the Town of Blacksburg at
(540) 961-1105 to discuss your tax liabilities with the appropriate town.
When do I need to purchase a dog tag?
When a puppy is four(4) months old it is required to have a dog tag.
What does a dog license cost, when do they go on sale and where can they be purchased?
An annual fee of $5.00 is charged for male or female and $3.00 for unsexed
(spayed or neutered). A 20 dog kennel tag is $25.00 and a 50 dog kennel is
$35.00. Dog tags go on sale November 1 of each year. The dog tags can be
purchased at the Treasurer’s Office or Blacksburg Municipal Building.
What do I need to get a dog tag?
You must present a valid certification of vaccination, signed by the licensed
veterinarian performing the vaccination, specifying the date of the vaccination, the
expiration date, a brief description of the dog, sex of the dog and name and address of the animal’s owner.
When may I renew my Montgomery County Motor Vehicle License?
All outstanding personal property
taxes must be paid in full before a county motor vehicle license will be issued. Montgomery County Code Chapter 6, Article IV, Division 2, entitled County Vehicle License was amended effective August 14, 2007. County decals will no longer be issued or required for display on vehicles. A motor vehicle license fee will be assessed each calendar year. For calendar year 2008 and subsequent years, the license fee shall be due on December 5th of the preceding year and shall be billed by the Treasurer at the same time as personal property taxes. The 2008 motor vehicle license fee will be $20.00.
What must I do if I trade vehicles or buy a vehicle?
A motor vehicle license fee will be assessed each calendar year based on January 1 ownership/garage jurisdiction. For calendar year 2008, and subsequent years, the license fee shall be due on December 5th of the preceeding year and shall be billed by the Treasurer at the same time as personal property taxes.
If I move into Montgomery County from another jurisdiction, will
Montgomery County honor the other jurisdiction’s decal or motor vehicle license until it expires?
Montgomery County will honor the decal or motor vehicle license from another jurisdiction until the expiration date.
If my vehicle is garaged in the Town of Christiansburg or the Town of Blacksburg do I pay a County motor vehicle license fee?
You may contact the Town of Christiansburg (540) 382-6128 or the Town of Blacksburg (540) 961-1105 for motor vehicle license/decal information on vehicles that have those garage jurisdictions.
