Employment

Thank you for your interest in employment with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. Our office seeks qualified and highly motivated individuals who are interested in a challenging and rewarding career opportunity. State of Virginia and Montgomery County Sheriff's Office law enforcement and jailor minimum requirements are listed below:

  1. Be a citizen of the United States.
  2. Be at least 18 years of age, preferably 21 years of age for law enforcement assignments.
  3. Possess a valid Virginia driver's license.
  4. Have a high school education or equivalent.
  5. Be in good health and physical condition.
  6. Be of good moral character and reputation.
  7. Have eyesight corrected to 20/20 and normal hearing.
  8. Have not been convicted, pled guilty or pled no contest to a felony or any offense considered a felony in Virginia.
  9. SWORN POSITIONS: Must be certified by a physician to be physically able to run one and one-half miles at a moderate pace, perform a free weight bench press, do push-ups, and sit ups. Must also be able to perform sit and reach flexibility test and participate in unarmed self-defense training.

Prior to employment, an extensive background investigation will be conducted. A physical examination by a licensed physician may be required for certain positions. All applicants are required to pass a written practical aptitude test and psychological examination by a licensed psychiatrist. Appointments of all applicants will be made solely at the discretion of the Sheriff.

Individuals meeting the minimum requirements are invited to complete and submit the following documents 1) Sheriff's Office Employment Application; 2) Release of Information Form, and 3) Domestic Violence Statement. Both forms #2 and #3 must be signed in the presence of a Notary Public.

Individuals meeting the minimum qualifications for law enforcement or jailor positions are invited to complete and submit the required applications. All applications are kept on file for a period of one year.
