Communications Services Division
The Communications Division is the heart of the Sheriff’s Office. Every 911 and emergency
call that comes from the county is handled here. The dispatch center is manned 24 hours a day,
365 days a year. We have nine positions in this division, which is headed by the chief deputy.
The communications center is the “life line” of our office and the citizen’s we serve. The
communications operator has a multitude of duties, which often occur simultaneously. They are
responsible to operate radio communication equipment, which have multiple channels to receive
reports, requests, and dispatch mobile law enforcement, other law enforcement agencies, fire, and
rescue units. They receive all emergency 911 calls that are outside the town limits, but are in
Montgomery County. Our communications operation has multi-line telephone center to receive information,
complaints, and requests for assistance. Since most of our calls for our office come through this
center, the operator will transfer calls to the proper extensions.
The communication operators are responsible for maintaining the location and status of each deputy, along with other units, such as fire and rescue. They are also trained to operate several computer terminals, such as entering records in the local, state, and national files. They also check Department of Motor Vehicle files for car and driver information. These computer networks will also allow them to enter or find information on stolen property, wanted persons, and missing persons. This terminal allows the operator to send local and national messages to other agencies.
The communications operator is required to enter all warrants into our department database and forward them to the civil and criminal warrant division. With this terminal, our operators can access files and information for people that may have questions concerning traffic violations or civil process. The final terminal in the center is the Integrated Flood Observing and Warning System (IFLOWS), this gives us an update on weather conditions and any flooding.
