177 Corridor Study Update

The 177 Corridor Study Update was conducted between 1998 and 2001 and involved revising the Comprehensive Plan for the Virginia 177/ Interstate-81 Corridor. Additional information on the 177 Corridor is available from:

April 1998
Board of Supervisors directed Planning Commission to work with Radford Planning Commission on a joint Comprehensive Plan amendment for the Corridor Area on the south side of Interstate-81.
Joint work session scheduled for June 17th with Radford Planning Commission to discuss joint Comprehensive plan amendment for the Corridor Area on the south side of Interstate-81
Work session with the Radford Planning Commission rescheduled for September
September 1998
Held joint Work Session with Radford Planning Commission. Planning staff to work with Planning District Commission staff to develop timetalbe and cost estimate for an Amendment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan for the Corridor Area (1993).
October 1998 Contract with Planning District Commission to prepare amendment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan for the Corridor Area (1993) approved by the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors. Awaiting approval by Radford.
November 1998 Contract with Planning District Commission approved by Radford Planning Commission but tabled by Radford City Council.
June 1999 Following an earlier meeting between the Radford Mayor, the Radford City Manager, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors Chairman, and the County Administrator, the Radford City Council approved proceeding with revision of the Joint Comprehensive Plan for the Corridor Area. Met with Planning District Commission staff to prepare revised contract for proceeding with the work.
August 1999 Revised Scope of Work received from the New River Valley Planning District Commission (NRVPDC).
September 1999 Contract executed between NRVPDC, Radford, and Montgomery County to conduct study update. Steering Committee held first monthly meeting to organize.
October 1999 Steering Committee Meeting: highway and water & sewer issues.
November 1999 Steering Committee Meeting: future development plans and emergency services for the corridor.

January 2000 Steering Committee Meeting: planned agenda for public information meeting to be held on February 2nd, 2000.
February 2000 Public information meeting to receive citizen input held on February 2nd at Bethel School. Steering Committee Meeting: discussed results from public information meeting.
March 2000 Steering Committee Meeting: land use issues
April 2000 Steering Committee Meeting: sewer issues with Charlie Maus (Peppers Ferry Regional Wastewater Authority) and Michael Kirk (Montgomery County Public Service Authority).
May 2000 Steering Committee Meeting: sewer issues with Jettie Montgomery (Radford City)
June 2000 Steering Committee Meeting: future land use issues
July 2000 Steering Committee Meeting: future land use issues. Public information meeting tentatively secheduled for September.
August 2000 Steering Committee Meeting: draft future land use plan and draft report. Public information meeting scheduled for September 21st.
September 2000 Public information meeting held at Bethel Elementary School on September 21st.
Ocober 2000 Steering Committee held two meetings to complete discussion of comments from public meeting and made final recommendations on future land use plan and report to the two Planning Commissions (Radford and Montgomery County).
November 2000 Montgomery County Planning Commission reviewed Comprehensive Plan amendments to implement study recommendations and scheduled public hearing for December 6th.
December 2000 Montgomery County Planning Commission held public hearing and recommended approval of the Comprehensive Plan amendments to implement study recommendations. Staff met with Radford and NRVPDC representatives to work on amending impervious surface requirement in the 1999 Zoning Ordinance.
January 2001 Montgomery County Board of Supervisors schedule a public hearing on the Comprehensive Plan amendments for February 22nd.
February 2001 Montgomery County Board of Supervisors held a public hearing on the Comprehensive Plan amendments on the 22nd.
March 2001 Comprehensive Plan amendments are approved by the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors. Awaiting approval by Radford City Council.
May 2001

Comprehensive Plan amendments are approved by the Radford City Council.

June, 2001 Radford City Council asked for a joint meeting with Board of Supervisors on the Study Update. Meeting scheduled for July 30th.
July, 2001 Supervisors held joint work session with Radford City Council to review and discuss study recommendations.
