Coal Mining Heritage Park

The Coal Mining Heritage Park is being developed in conjunction with community organizations, like the Coal Mining Heritage Association, educational institutions (Montgomery County Public Schools, Radford University, and Virginia Tech) and government agencies. COAL MINER'S PARK

COAL MINING HERITAGE PARK (CMHP) ADVISORY COMMITTEE
  • Responsible for the development and long-term maintenance of the CMHP at Merrimac.

PLANNING DEPARTMENT

  • Transition staff support for the Coal Mining Heritage Park (CMHP) and the CMHP Advisory Committee from Planning Department to the Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Complete current activities including Merrimac Link Trail (including NPS/DCR grant administration), WPI Stream Restoration Project, Park Master Plan revision (including Tipple/Hoist Area Plan for DMME) and on-line Globe Program in coordination with the Natural History Museum and the Public Schools.
  • Prepare TEA-21 and/or NPS/DCR grant application for Upper Merrimac Trail.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTION/ PROJECT DESCRIPTION & CHANGES
June, 2002 Met with County Engineer and Procurement Manager on awarding of contract for construction of Link Trail. Supervisors approved funding of the Link Trail in FY 02-03 as part of the Capital Improvements Program. Natural History Museum held first teacher training session for the GLOBE project at the park.
May, 2002 Met with County Engineer, PSA representatives, and Waste Policy Institute (WPI) representative at park to discuss artificial wetland project to address water quality concerns. Met with Parks & Recreation representative to draft a memorandum of understanding with schools and Coal Mining Heritage Association (CMHA) and discuss transition of park responsibility from Plannit and Inspections to Parks and Recreation.
April, 2002 Advisory Committee met April 16th and discussed transition of park responsibility from Planning and Inspections to Parks and Recreation. Met with County Administrator, County Engineer, and Parks & Recreation Director.
March, 2002 Met with County Administrator, County Engineer, and Parks & Recreation Director. Revised information on website for use by Montgomery County Schools' GLOBE Program. Provided information to WPI, DMME, and OSM for artificial wetland design.
February, 2002 Advisory Committee met February 12th and discussed involvement with the local Merrimac community.
January, 2002 Working with Montgomery County Schools on GLOBE program and with WPI on stream restoration project.
December, 2001  Coal Mining Heritage Park Advisory Committee met on December 10th and reviewed activities completed during 2001, a well as work probgram for 2002. Kim Lee, Science Coordinator for the Montgomery County Public Schools, was present to discuss designation of park under G.L.O.B.E. program
November, 2001  Held park cleanup activities on November 3rd. Held fire reduction work day, including removal of deadfalls, November 10th. Preparing Annual Report to be presented to Advisory Committee, Parks & Recreation Commission, and Planning Commission. Coal Mining Heritage Park photography project completed and delivered to the Montgomery County Planning Department. 
October, 2001; Completed CIP request to fund construciton of the Merrimac Link Trail and presented request to CIP Technical Review Committee. Held park cleanup activities for October 6th, 13th, and 27th.  
September, 2001 Working on Capital Improvements Program (CIP) request to fund construction of Link Trail; Organizing park cleanup and construction activities for October 6th, 13th, 27th, and November 3rd. 
August, 2001  Bid of $147,842 for Link Trail was higher than expected. Attempts by the Advisory Committee to reduce the initial cost by phasing construction over several years have broght the cost down, but they still exceed the available funds. Therefore, funidng for the entire Link Trail wil be sought in next year's CIP. Representatives from the Division of Mined Land Reclaimation (DMME) and Waste Policy Institute (WPI) visited the park to discuss the design of the artificial wetland to treat water quality problems in the park. Contracted water quality sampling for the park in order to address potential lead concentrations and to assist in the design of the artificial wetland and the establishment of the GLOBE project. 
July, 2001   Worked with students from Radford University and the Fairfax County Public Schools in designing the initial master plan for the tipple area of the park; Reviewing bids received for constrution of the Link Trail and possible alternatives to reduce construction costs. 
June, 2001   Bids opened June 28th for constructio of the Link Trail. Draper Aden completes engineering survey of Merrimac Link area. Initial construction of Coal Mining Heritage Park web site underway. 
May, 2001  Working with County Engineer, Purchasing Agent and consultant (Draper-Aden) to bid construction of the Link Trail. Results of initial resistivity studies completed. 
April, 2001 ATS Resistivity study ongoing. Working with County Engineer, Purchasing Agent and consultant (Draper-Aden) to bid construction of the Link Trail. Park cleanup and replanting of park flower beds.
March, 2001 Working with County Engineer, Purchasing Agent and consultant (Draper-Aden) to bid construction of the Link Trail.
February, 2001 Held third meeting of Advisory Committee and reviewed work program for 2001. Also met with County Engineer and consultant on bid package and specifications for construction of the Link Trail.
January, 2001 Held second meeting of Advisory Committee and reviewed preliminary plans and specifications for bidding Link Trail.
