an excellent overview to Map Projections and cartography.

This site provides a compendium of information on cartography,
the use of maps and cartographic tools, as well as a historical perspective
on the impact of the discovery of latitude, longitude, and invention and use
of navigational tools. In addition, the site authors provide an extensive
list of online educational materials on cartography, geography, and related
sciences.
