Questions

As part of the community meeting, participants were separated into five groups and were asked, both as individuals and as a group, to consider five questions interjurisdictional planning successes, failures, and opportunities. The five questions were:

  • What are the major successes (past or present) among two or more of the localities in coordinating their comprehensive planning and implementation efforts?

  • What are the major failures or missed opportunities of two or more of the localities in coordinating their comprehensive planning and implementation efforts?

  • What are the most critical planning issues facing the four localities collectively?

  • What are the most inviting opportunities for collaboration now facing the four localities?

  • What critical planning issues face the unincorporated areas of the County and not the Towns/City?

CF Cultural Facilities

Publicly or privately held facilities which promote either the arts, sciences, or humanities. The category, which is also related to Economic Development-Tourism (EC-T), includes:

EC Economic Development

Includes public, quasi-public, and private initiatives to promote economic development in Montgomery County. In addition, the category covers areas where rapid development or alternative development have created problems in other areas (business expansion vs. sprawl vs. traffic congestion). In some cases, as with retail, the sub-category is seen as both a positive and a negative. The sub-categories include:

Public, quasi-public, and private recreational facilities and initiatives. Recreation, here, is defined in traditional terms (sites which promote physical activity, including individual and team sports). While the heritage parks are part of the county’s recreation system, they have been included in the cultural facilities category because they are more closely related to museums and historic preservation than to traditionally drawn parks. The sub-categories include:

T Transportation

Public and private transportation programs, facilities, and infrastructure. Transportation related issues which involve a greater scope than a specific program, facility, or system (Blacksburg Transit, Rt. 460, or roads) or are adjacent to a specific route (e.g. 3A corridor) are sub-categorized under Planning.
