This effort likewise would not have been possible without the considerable technical assistance provided by area professionals, namely Michael Appleby for his expertise in public participation, Van C. Anderson for his sketches and technical expertise, and Randi Lemmon for his energy and extensive experience with open-space and land-use planning. Valuable technical assistance was also provided by area businesses, nonprofit organizations and government agencies, including: Anderson and Associates Consulting Engineers, the National Forest Service, Nature Conservancy, the Virginia Department of Forestry, and the Virginia Tech Community Design Assistance Center. We also appreciate the assistance provided by the Virginia Tech Urban Affairs and Landscape Architecture programs and the students who participated in studios that contributed to the Initiative. Finally, we would also like to recognize Van Anderson for his fine work on the pen and ink sketches that are found throughout this document.
